When to go for Serengeti Balloon Safaris

You can experience balloon safaris at anytime during the year, but the best time is subject to your accommodation and expectations for the aerial views.

The best time to view the Great Migration in the Serengeti is June to October during the dry season and also the best time to view the migration in the northern Serengeti. If your wish is to view large herds from above and capture the beautiful sight of a river crossing, this is best time to travel.

Inflated balloons sailing over the southern Serengeti during the December March time is highlighted by young animals, stunning views of plains filled with wildebeests along with their young and predators can also be spotted in the area.

These months of April, May, and November, while the rain is less these months have to offer the best conditions for photography with the soft light. Although these months are calmer with fewer tourists and the potential for rain, balloon safaris occur daily subject to safe weather conditions.

As the sun rises and the air is cool and stable, balloon trips start. Always checking in on the weather, your safety comes first. If we need to cancel or postpone your flight from the rain or wind, we will refund or help you work on a better schedule.

Tips to get the most from your Serengeti Balloon Safari.

  • Make your reservations in advance: From July to October, balloon safaris fill up for their limited spots at a rapid pace. We advise that you try to book at least 2 to 3 months in advanced.
  • Dress in layers for warmth: Most of the time, the weather is early heats and will be a comfortable warm. So, we well it is a good idea to wear light pants and a comfortable coat.
  • Use a camera strap: A strap will help keep your camera safe during the moments that it gets hectic during both takeoff and landing.
  • Park Light: For your safety, space in the basket is limited. So, be ready to make your belongings minimal and secure.
  • Be comfortable Standing: Most balloon safaris are about forty-five to hour-long. Though the basket is padded, the only position is to be on your feet and steady through the balloon ride.
  • Listen to safety instructions: Take the balloon pilots certificate and experience into consideration, and be sure to mind all instructions during takeoff and landing for your own safety.
  • Expect a Bush breakfast champagne toast: Traditionally, guests are welcomed with champagne and a bush breakfast after landing, and this tradition should not be overlooked.

Top Serengeti Balloon Safari Destinations

Central Serengeti (Seronera)

The greatest launch region. Excellent for panoramic vistas and wildlife sightings in bolstering Serengeti features all year round. Ideal for most first-time visitors.

Northern Serengeti (Mara River area)

Launches are available during the months of July through October. Benefits the witnessing of the great migration, most notably during the spectacular river crossings at the sides of the rivers during these months.

Southern Serengeti (Ndutu Plains)

Flights are active from December to March during the calving season. Excellent for photographers and those looking for sweeping vistas of the range and uncovered landscapes.

Western Corridor (Grumeti River)

Less scenic and crowded with launch areas close to river dense forests and open savannahs. most optimal in these months are May and June.

What to Expect on Your Serengeti Balloon Safari Day

Your excitement starts the previous day with a briefing, and on the day itself, we arrive at your lodge or camp to pick you up before dawn. Now the thrill starts with you having the chance to spot the nocturnal wildlife, soaking in the serene first light at the horizon, and the anticipation building by the second.

At the spot, the hot air balloon is been inflated, and with your participation, the pilot will give you a steps safety briefing. You then step into the basket, sit back and relax as you are comfortably held by the cushioned high sides.

Comfort of the basket will go alongside with your favorite birds’ song and the gentle warmth of the sun enveloped on your skin. Balloon is now all set to go.

You will have a front row seat to the spectacular view as the earth starts receding and you go past the Serengeti, the view is without a doubt magnificent. You will experience serene drifting over the plains, swaying with the wind like polaroids in a movie.

From afar at a bird’s eye view, you will spot wild animals like the giraffes, elephants or even hyenas go about their day on the bottom and if we are lucky your view will be good enough to bring the oasis into view.

You will be in the air for about 45 minutes to 60 minutes as long as the weather is good. Your pilot will adjust the height and position according to the terrain and smoothly sail through the air without a jerky motion. Along the way, you will be pointed to many interesting things, different landmarks and herds.

Your landing is soft but there may be a bit of jostling due to wind. A welcoming crew will greet you and guide you to a gorgeously set table awaiting you in the bush. Like most balloon excursions in Africa, breakfast is served hot, fresh, and paired with champagne.

Breakfast is served in the open air and includes fresh fruits, pastries, and eggs. The atmosphere is cheerful and laid back. Most guests note it is the culinary highlight of their voyage.

How safe is a Serengeti balloon safari?

It is absolutely safe. We work with certified balloon companies that adhere to cross-country safety regulations. The pilots are trained professionals who have considerable experience in the field. Each flight is carefully checked for weather conditions. Your well-being is always the top priority.

How high do we fly?

Your height can range anywhere from 0-300m in the air as the pilot has the discretion to adjust to the wind and visibility. At times, you may be at 10 to 20 meters off the ground to as high as 300m.

What is the duration of the flight?

The duration of the flight usually takes from 45 minutes to an hour. The time spent is also inclusive of the experience from pickup to return, which is approximately 4 to 5 hours.

Are children allowed to participate in the balloon safari?

Yes, children are allowed, however, there is a minimum age requirement of 7 years and a height requirement of approximately 1.2 meters. The child has to be fit to stand for the entire duration of the flight and follow given directions.

What if the flight is canceled due to weather?

If your flight is canceled, we’ll help reschedule for another day during your trip. If rescheduling isn’t possible, a full refund is provided. Weather cancellations are rare but possible during rainy or windy mornings.

Is there a weight limit?

Yes. Most balloon operators have a weight limit of 120–130 kg (265–285 lbs) per person. If you’re above the limit, we’ll discuss available options in advance to ensure safety and comfort.

Do I need special clothing or gear?

No. Just wear warm, layered clothing, comfortable closed shoes, and a hat or cap. We provide blankets if it’s cold. Cameras are welcome, but large bags are not allowed in the basket.

Can I do a balloon safari if I’m afraid of heights?

Many guests with a fear of heights are surprised at how calm and secure they feel. There’s no sensation of movement or swaying. The basket is stable, and the quiet flight helps put people at ease. Most end up loving it.

Is the balloon safari suitable for elderly travelers?

Yes, provided you are able to stand for one hour and climb in and out of the basket using built-in steps. We’ll discuss your needs ahead of time to ensure a smooth experience.
